Schneider Electric launches first EV charging station at Awana Genting

September 06 11:10 2019

Visitors to Genting Highlands can now conveniently charge their electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) at 6,000ft above sea level. Schneider Electric in partnership with Resorts World Genting (RWG) today launched the first electric vehicle (EV) charging station at the Awana SkyCentral Transportation Hub Carpark located at Genting Highlands Premium Outlets (GHPO). The charging station uses Schneider Electric’s robust and energy-efficient EVLink Smart Wallbox charging solution.

Studies have shown that sales of new electric cars worldwide surpassed two million units for the first time in 2018–a 72 percent increase over the previous year. Of course, this is just a microscopic market share of 2.1 percent out of total cars worldwide. Nevertheless, more consumers are embracing EVs for improved fuel economy, reduced CO2 emissions, and a clearer conscience.

In Malaysia, a total of 5,403 fully EVs and 46,981 PHEVs were registered as at March 31 this year. As of September 2018, there are 400 EV charging stations nationwide, deployed by various providers such as chargEV and Shell.

“When it comes to environmental responsibility, incremental gains are no longer enough. We already consumer 1.7 planets’ worth of resources per year. At Schneider Electric, we believe thats sustainability must be the endgame of any company in today’s world. It is at the core of our strategy and a great value that we deliver to our customers, shareholders and employees, said Astri Ramayanti Dharmawan, Country President, Schneider Electric Malaysia.

Schneider Electric’s EVLink Smart Wallbox charging solution comes with built-in energy management function that enables efficient charging and responsible use of energy without compromising charging performance.

The solution is compatible with all EVs on the road today, able to charge up 10 times faster than a domestic socket outlet. This of course, depends on the EV used and the power rating of the charging station used.

The EVLink Smart Wallbox has a charging power of either 7.4kW or 22kW, and a Type 2 socket out. With the 7.4kW box, it will take four hours to fully charge a typical 24kWh electric passenger car, or one hour for a 40km range. With a 22kW Wallbox, however, that time is cut to just 20 minutes.

As a comparison, it takes 30 minutes to charge a car to full capacity with the chargEV solution.

The charging station is compliant with full electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle charging standards, and provides optimum user protection thanks to a dedicated brand circuit in the electrical switchboard that’s been inspected by a qualified electrician. Unlike domestic socket outlets, the solution is designed to deliver a high charging current for long periods of use daily.

The solution has IP54-rated weather resistance as well as IK10 impact resistance.

It comes with a friendly “Plug-in and Charge” design as well as intuitive interface that includes a light indicator for charging status and a one-touch stop/restart button.

The charging station is located at Car Park Basement Level 1, Pillar C5 and B5 at Awana SkyCentral Transportation Hub, Genting Highlands. It is open 24/7 to all visitors and tenants who are looking to charge their EVs. Charging is free.

For starters, there are nine 7.4kW charging bays (upgradable to 22kW) and Resorts World Genting has said that it plans to expand this to 20 by end of the year.

Launched in 2017, the Awana SkyCentral Transportation Hub in Genting is home to the Awana Bus Terminal—the main bus gateway to Resorts World Genting and Awana SkyWay, the resort’s state-of-the-art cable car system. The hub houses nearly 5,000 parking bays as well as various retail and restaurant outlets.

Resorts World Genting is situated just 58km away from the capital of Kuala Lumpur, at 6,000ft above sea level. The premier leisure and entertainment resort enjoys cool weather between 16-24 degrees throughout the year and is one of the most popular tourists’ destinations with 25.9 million visitors in 2018 alone.
