Learn about iPhone’s hidden features: DSDS and eSIM

June 08 20:30 2020

The iPhone XS / XR released in 2018 is the first iPhone to support Dual SIM Dual Standby also known as DSDS. Years after many Android models such as Samsung, the iPhone finally caught up with this feature.

With the introduction of DSDS, Apple has also introduced an impressive new technology, eSIM. All iPhone models including iPhone 11 and iPhone SE 2020 already support DSDS and eSIM.

An eSIM is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a cellular plan from your carrier without having to use a physical nano-SIM.

Apple’s outlines  three use cases of DSDS:

  1. Use one plan for business and another plan for personal calls.
  2. Add a local data plan when you travel outside of the country or region.
  3. Have separate voice and data plans.

Thanks to this, we can have a dedicated number for business use, while using your original physical number for family and friends. In this way, better work-life balance.

More and more people travel globally. One of the biggest issues is data roaming, which is not only expensive, but also with bad service quality. With eSIM, we can simply purchase and download a local plan to use at the destination. Therefore, We will enjoy the same network quality and rate as local people.

Many operators’ data plans are costly. The subscription from the operator may only come with limited options. When your data at the end of the month is running low, you will likely incur additional cost for the top-up. Alternatively, you can also use eSIM.

There are generally two ways to use iPhone’s eSIM. One is to scan a QR code of eSIM plan. The other is to download the plan through the app.

Most operators today, especially in their physical stores, offer QR code as the only option. If you buy the plan online, the QR code needs to be displayed on another device, because your iPhone cannot scan itself. This creates a bit of friction.

A better way is to get an app, and enable the plan from the app, no second device needed,  no QR code scanning required. With one-click, you can add your plan into the eSIM!

Apple has six worldwide service providers for this feature, and Redtea Mobile is one of them. Redtea Mobile has launched RedteaGO, an App to provide its eSIM service.
