16 Billion Pounds Of Plastic Enter The Ocean Each Year – Hawaiian Company Diamond Head Equipment Is Helping Clean It!

Plastic has found itself into every nook and cranny of modern life. Cheap, durable, lightweight – what was once thought of as a miracle material is now pouring into oceans killing over 1 million marine animals each year through ingestion or entanglement. Diamond Head Equipment is leading the fight with a simple mission: create outdoor gear from recycled plastic and give 5% of every sale back toward ocean cleanup efforts.

“The epicenter of the plastic crisis is in developing countries where plastic has infiltrated areas with little or no waste management in place. Plastic ends up improperly disposed where it makes its way into creek and river systems and eventually out to the ocean. We want to be part of the solution, so we are finding use for used plastic,” says Andy Garcia, a surfer and ocean-lover who founded Diamond Head Equipment in Hawaii in 2018.

The company’s newest product Eco-Chill Gaiters are each made from three recycled plastic bottles. They also have hats made from eight recycled plastic bottles. Diamond Head Equipment takes every opportunity to reduce their plastic footprint. Eco-Chill Gaiters come shipped in 100% recycled paper packaging that can be easily recycled. The company has opted to avoid throw-away packaging like hang tags or unit-level packaging

Diamond Head Equipment donates 5% of every sale to two high impact organizations: The Ocean Cleanup and Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii. The Ocean Cleanup develops and implements technology to extract plastic pollution from the oceans and intercept it in rivers before it can reach the ocean. Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii inspires and educates local communities through fun, hands-on beach cleanups.

Future plans for the company include recycled plastic backpacks and apparel. “Plastic isn’t going away anytime soon. Creating an economic incentive to collect and recycle plastic in high-risk areas might just be one of the most effective strategies to manage the plastic problem in the short term,” says Andy Garcia.
