The Teen Suicide Prevention Society Breaks the Deadly Silence Around Suicide

September 8, 2021 – Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people 10 to 34 years of age, with over three thousand American teens attempting to take their own lives every day. According to the Center for Disease Control, over 25% of young adults are struggling with suicidal thoughts, double what it was just two years ago. Friday, September 10th marks World Suicide Prevention Day and The Teen Suicide Prevention Society is presenting free workshops on how to have “‘The Talk’ That Saves Lives” in honor of the day’s mission.

Most suicide prevention programs attempt to answer the question, “How do we stop suicide?” By that time, the suicidal thoughts are already in full swing. The Teen Suicide Prevention Society asks, “How can we stop suicidal thinking?” Their mission is to put a buffer between the teen and the edge, so they never need to be talked off a ledge. To this end, they’ve created “The Talks”, neuroscience-based discussions to help build emotional resilience among the participants so that suicidal thoughts never get stuck.

“We imagine a world where teen suicide is a thing of the past,” says Jackie Simmons, Director of The Teen Suicide Prevention Society. “We believe in pure-prevention, which includes having “The Talk” about suicide before you think they need it. Imagine instead of worrying if your loved one’s having thoughts of leaving, you start getting to know their reasons for staying.”

She continues, “When it comes to having “The Talk” about suicide, we’ve found that attitude matters. Knowing what to say and how to get the conversation started is one step. Grasping the idea that you don’t have to think they “need it” before starting makes it easier, and it helps to have a guide. That’s why we offer the pure-prevention program that’s saving lives and we’re giving it away for free on World Suicide Prevention Day, September 10th.”

Free workshops on how to have “‘The Talk’ that Saves Lives” will be taking place at various times during World Suicide Prevention Day, September 10th. Sign up for free at www.TalksThatSaveLives.com
