Even as a young man, Carlos Gutierrez’s penchant for connecting with others shined through. His first claim to fame was his role as the San Diego State University mascot, Monte Montezuma, for over 13 years. Carlos’s role as Monte led acting and modeling roles before settling in in the marketing department with Anheuser-Busch.

“And that got me into the radio business,” Carlos recalls.

Carlos went on to spend the better part of a decade selling radio airtime for some of San Diego’s Spanish-speaking radio giants. He sold across 13 stations and websites in San Diego.

“It was awesome. Local-based, and really realizing how San Diego and Tijuana are one region with millions of people coming across the border every month. I was working with small businesses in the Spanish language industry as well as some big ones. It was awesome at the time.”

Yet, all good things must come to an end.

Standing On His Own

In 2004, Carlos was the #7 salesperson out of 115 consultants. But ego and politics stood in the way to his ultimate success, and that same year, he was laid off.

“We were a publicly held company. I realized I was just another number,” Carlos remembers.

Carlos began looking for similar work in the radio industry but hit unexpected roadblocks.

“I was waiting for my third interview with the station I left before in 1997, and this was 2005. It was my third interview, and the guy made me wait an hour. So I said, ‘Screw this. I’m going to do something else.’”

Carlos took some time off work to consider his options. He traveled to Russia, Hawaii, and Utah while pondering his next move.

“I knew I didn’t want to go back to a publicly traded company. My dad was always in real estate, and I did a bit of investing here and there.”

The Road to Success

“I thought, ‘I’m going to go become a Carmel Mountain Real Estate Agent and just crush it,” Carlos explains. “And then, I got my teeth kicked in. I realized how hard it really was.”

Carlos began to find success, but just as his business stabilized, the Great Recession hit. Luckily, he was introduced to Mike Ferry’s coaching program around the same time.

“I went to meet him in 2008, and I showed up in board shorts, a t-shirt, and flip flops sitting in the back of 4000 agents, most dressed in suits and ties. Me and my partner asked, ‘Why do we want to connect with these agents?'”

As Carlos continued showing up at the events, he began to realize why he wanted to connect with those agents — referrals. Carlos began building relationships with agents from all over the country, and referrals were flowing in both directions. Carlos had found a coach who could guide him to the type of success he had only dreamed of.

“That opened my eyes,” Carlos says.

Business As Usual

Today, Carlos is one of the top real estate agents in Carlsbad CA. He was recently ranked #6 out of approximately 17,000 agents in San Diego County by the San Diego Business Journal. He continues to value coaching, training, and connecting with other top agents across the country.

“I’m always upgrading my business, studying the market, and learning how to be more efficient for my clients. I want to make things easy, effortless, and as profitable as possible, and I’m grateful to have great people to help me do that.”

At home, Carlos and his wife, Jeannete, have a four-year-old daughter, Bella. Carlos prioritizes fitness in his life and is an avid believer in morning practices like writing out his intentions and what he’s grateful for.

“If I could share anything with other agents, you have to time block your day. Do the hardest things for the day, get them out of the way in the morning.”

As he looks ahead, Carlos is planning to keep upgrading his abilities and tweaking his sales game with one goal in mind — to better serve his clients.

“It’s all about the attitude of gratitude. What else are we here for? What are we doing? And why are we half-assing it?” Carlos asks. “I will keep upgrading. Work hard for the things you want. Nothing comes easy, and the more you are grateful and put your best foot forward, the better your life will be. You deserve the best and nothing less.”
