From Skid Row To Artist In Three Short Years

Three short years after fighting his way out of Skid Row, painter Jack Winthrop has catapulted to the forefront of the Los Angeles art scene, showcasing work inspired by his transformative journey to overcome drug addiction.

Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Winthrop recently relocated to Los Angeles after living and working in New York. His towering paintings evoke their viewers’ curiosity and contemplation, with unexpected interpretations of humanity’s inner and outer worlds expressed through complex studies of shape and color. Winthrop’s pieces come out as both highly expressive and carefully planned. Although forming an abstract image, each color and shape makes sense in the totality of the painted canvas.

Riveting styles to capture what it’s like to be human

His education at the New York School of Visual Arts has influenced his style and approach. His ascent has been fueled by a distinctively bold and vibrant abstract style, attempting to translate the complex depths of the human experience, including his own, onto the canvas. When asked about his creation process, Winthrop said, “I believe that the artist and work becomes a time capsule, eventually absorbed into the ether and timeline of our history. Hopefully, all I achieve is an accurate representation of my experience here.”

In the limelight

TOTEMS is Winthrop’s ode to spirituality and growth, dedicated to and driven by a distinct emotional experience. Each piece is embarked upon by setting an intention to study one particular feeling – Gratitude, Love, Serenity, Intuition. His turbulent yet triumphant personal path shines through in this stirring series. He explores the significance of presenting art within a space and its experiential meaning with the audience. Conceptually, each totem created becomes its own energy and frequency reverberating within its environment.

Winthrop’s compelling and emotive series TOTEMS was recently showcased at the Fragile World exhibit at UTA’s Art Space alongside new works from renowned sculptor Carl Hopgood. The exhibition debuted to wide critical acclaim and drew art world royalty to the opening.
