Empowering Students to Create Financial Systems They Will Use in the Real World

QUEEN CREEK, AZ – 27 states now require that high schools offer personal finance courses, and 17 of those states require that students complete these courses to graduate. Despite these recent efforts to improve the financial literacy of those who are transitioning into adulthood, there is still a sizable gap between the financial education students receive and what they actually need to succeed. What’s more, there are several problems with the way that financial education is administered. For one, in a digital, post-pandemic world, students have grown accustomed to learning online. Additionally, many students are disinterested in financial education, particularly as most in-class lessons provide knowledge about personal finance without the practical resources needed to put that knowledge into action. Alex Major and Phillip Cano, Co-Founders of RETHINK Financial Education have made it their mission to bridge this gap—having developed an online curriculum that engages students and properly prepares them for adulthood.

RETHINK’s Personal Finance curriculum takes students beyond learning. Through this program, they gain access to not only essential knowledge, but also all of the tools and resources needed to create financial systems they can take with them into the real world. The curriculum differs from the average high school course in that the material is delivered in a much more engaging way. By employing the crawl-walk-run method, the program allows students to soak up the information before performing their own research, and ultimately, putting what they have learned into action. Because the program handles all of the teaching elements, it doesn’t even require a financial professional. Any teacher, administrator, or parent can facilitate the program.

In total, the program features six separate modules that cover the most important areas of personal finance—banking, budgeting, credit, debt, taxes and income, and investing. These topics and their subtopics are spread out over 59 video lessons and are accompanied by pre and post assessments, quizzes, and a final exam. What’s more, the curriculum delivers an on-demand, self-paced learning experience, allowing students to access the program’s content at any time, on any device, and from anywhere in the world—with the option to rewind and watch lessons on their own schedule. This also allows parents to get involved and offer their children any extra assistance as needed.
