5K to Marathon: How to Choose the Right Racing Shoe
Blue Sky Endurance helps Charleston runners navigate carbon plates, “super shoes” and choosing the right footwear for fall race season

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – October 1, 2026 – Fall race season is here, and runners across the Charleston area are preparing for everything from local 5Ks and 10Ks to half marathons and destination marathons.

Along with deciding how far to race comes another increasingly common question: Do I need a racing shoe?

With carbon plates, high-stack cushioning, ultra-light foams and $250-plus “super shoes” becoming increasingly visible at starting lines, Blue Sky Endurance says runners shouldn’t assume the fastest—or most expensive—shoe is automatically the best race-day choice.

“The best race shoe is the one that works for the runner, the distance and what they want to accomplish,” said Catherine Hollister, owner of Blue Sky Endurance. “You don’t have to be an elite runner to benefit from a performance shoe, but you also don’t need a carbon-plated shoe just because you’re racing.”

Does Race Distance Change the Right Shoe?

It can.

For a 5K or 10K, runners may prefer a lighter, more responsive shoe that feels quick underfoot.

As the distance increases to a half marathon, cushioning, efficiency and comfort become increasingly important alongside speed.

For a marathon, the equation can change again. A shoe has to feel good not only at mile one, but deep into 26.2 miles when fatigue sets in. Highly cushioned, plated racing shoes can be a great option for some runners, while others may perform better in a less aggressive shoe that provides the comfort and stability they need.

Are Carbon-Plated Shoes Only for Fast Runners?

No.

There is no pace requirement for wearing a carbon-plated racing shoe. Recreational runners can benefit from the lightweight materials, responsive cushioning and efficient ride found in today’s performance footwear.

But not every runner needs—or feels best in—a carbon shoe.

Rather than choosing by hype, price or what professional runners are wearing, Blue Sky Endurance recommends considering fit, comfort, stability, running mechanics, race distance and individual goals.

“We have runners come in asking for a specific super shoe because they’ve seen it online, heard about it from a friend or watched someone race in it,” said Hollister. “Sometimes that shoe is a great fit. Other times, once we have them try a few options, there’s another shoe that clearly feels and works better for them. That’s the value of being able to actually try different shoes instead of choosing one based on hype.”

For the Blue Sky Endurance fitting team, the goal isn’t to put every runner in the most expensive or technologically advanced shoe. It’s to help each runner find the shoe that makes sense for how they run and what they’re trying to accomplish.

“A race shoe should make you feel confident,” Hollister said. “If you’re fighting the shoe or don’t feel comfortable in it, the technology doesn’t matter.”

Don’t Make Race Morning the Test Run

Whatever shoe a runner chooses, Blue Sky Endurance recommends testing it before race day.

Race shoes should be worn during at least a few training runs, including some running at anticipated race pace when possible. This gives runners an opportunity to evaluate fit, socks, comfort and how the shoe responds at speed.

The same rule applies to carbon-plated shoes: race day should not be the first time you run in them.

The Bottom Line

Whether the starting line is a first 5K or a goal marathon, Blue Sky Endurance encourages runners to think beyond the label “race shoe.”

The question isn’t simply, “What’s the fastest shoe?”

It’s, “What’s the right shoe for the way I run and the race I’m running?”
