Glasgow, Scotland, UK – October 7, 2026 – What if waking up with no memory of who you are is not the end of your story, but the opening of a door to an entirely new understanding of life?
Author Cheef Chebe explores that provocative possibility in his forthcoming book, The Open Door, an imaginative and thought-provoking journey that moves between the physical world, the spiritual realm, ancestral memory, modern society and a mysterious universe where the boundaries between reality and possibility are repeatedly tested.
The story opens with a bewildered man awakening alone inside a strange treehouse. He cannot remember his name, his past or how he arrived there. Invisible voices speak of reincarnation, destiny and a man named Djambay who has supposedly been brought back from death for an extraordinary purpose. Soon, the confused protagonist learns that he may be Djambay, also known in his former Glasgow life as Peter Morgan and that his forgotten identity is connected to the ancient Kingdom of Zawoomba.
His guide through this increasingly surreal reality is Father Godson, a mysterious Fourth Dimension Professor, Ambatarian Priest and spiritual companion who introduces him to the “vortex-universe.” What begins as a desperate search for personal identity develops into an initiation involving the body, mind, spirit and soul, as well as the interconnected forces of time, energy and consciousness.
As Djambay’s memory begins to return, so does a past he had almost completely lost. He remembers being African-Ghanaian and Sissala, his life as a music teacher in Glasgow and most importantly, the childhood teachings of his grandfather, Naazaa Nankana. Those memories reconnect him with a family tradition of healing, medicinal plants, ancestral knowledge, service and a cultural inheritance that he had gradually left behind.
From there, The Open Door expands far beyond one man’s unusual rebirth.
Chebe uses Djambay’s journey to examine questions of cultural identity, colonial influence, religious tolerance, materialism, education, social isolation, mental health, inequality, artificial intelligence, environmental responsibility and humanity’s relationship with the natural world. The protagonist’s experiences repeatedly place competing ideas beside one another and ask readers not simply to accept an answer, but to question, examine and think.
At the heart of the narrative is Ambatarianism, presented within the story as an African-rooted philosophical and spiritual tradition that encourages openness, interconnectedness, service, ancestral awareness and the pursuit of knowledge rather than unquestioning belief. As Djambay moves deeper into his initiation, his struggle becomes less about proving whether the extraordinary things around him are “real” and more about determining what kind of person he will choose to become.
One of the book’s central ideas emerges through the Ambatarian Prophecy, a vision of a fairer alternative world built through cooperation rather than endless competition. The narrative imagines societies in which people have meaningful opportunities to live, develop their potential and share in collective prosperity, while also confronting modern anxieties surrounding affordability, technological displacement, artificial intelligence, conflict and social division.
The story refuses to remain in one place or even one dimension. Djambay travels from the mysterious treehouse to Glasgow, confronts fragments of his former life, meets a psychiatrist who questions his extraordinary experiences, boards the unconventional “Soul Train” and eventually reaches Ambatonia’s City of Light, a realm presented as a radically different vision of existence.
Yet beneath its fantastical settings, philosophical debates, unexpected humour and surreal encounters lies a deeply human question: What happens when someone who has lost almost everything, including his sense of self is given another opportunity to decide who he wants to be?
Djambay’s answer increasingly centers on purpose, service and collective responsibility. Rather than seeing greatness simply as power over others, the narrative explores leadership as service and argues that meaningful change depends upon people working together. At one critical stage in his journey, Djambay comes to understand greatness not as the achievement of one extraordinary individual but as something created through shared belief, responsibility and action.
By the novel’s conclusion, the frightened and disoriented man who awakened with an “empty glass” in a mysterious treehouse has undergone a remarkable transformation. His journey has given him a renewed sense of identity, possibility, responsibility and hope while leaving another door open to the adventures, learning and challenges still ahead.
With its combination of speculative fiction, magical realism, philosophical inquiry, African cultural perspectives, spiritual allegory, satire and contemporary social commentary, The Open Door is designed for readers who enjoy stories that entertain while inviting deeper questions about what it means to belong, believe, remember, heal and live with purpose.
The Open Door by Cheef Chebe is currently in the publishing phase and will be available to readers soon. Additional publication and purchasing information will be announced as the book approaches release.
