Updated outcomes-based ranking highlights California’s top colleges and universities—and shows why affordability, student success, and career outcomes matter as much as prestige.
EDsmart has released its Best Colleges in California 2026 rankings, identifying the state’s top-performing colleges and universities using federal College Scorecard data rather than reputation surveys.

Among 143 California institutions with sufficient federal data to receive an EDsmart grade, the California Institute of Technology ranks first in the state (No. 2 nationally), followed by Stanford University (No. 3 nationally), the University of California, Berkeley (No. 10 nationally), and the University of California, Los Angeles (No. 15 nationally).
The guide also groups California’s highest-performing institutions into four distinct categories—elite private research universities, University of California campuses, Claremont liberal arts colleges, and hands-on California State University campuses such as Cal Poly San Luis Obispo—helping students compare schools based on academic fit, affordability, and career outcomes rather than reputation alone.
Key Findings
Caltech, Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UCLA lead California in EDsmart’s outcomes-based rankings, with Caltech and Stanford also ranking No. 2 and No. 3 nationally.
Average net cost after financial aid at many top University of California campuses falls between approximately $12,500 and $16,000, while several California State University campuses—including Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State San Bernardino—average roughly $4,000 to $4,600.
Highest median earnings after attendance among the top-ranked schools include Caltech (about $153,000), Harvey Mudd College (about $137,000), and Stanford University (about $137,000).
Admission rates range from approximately 2.6% at Caltech and 3.6% at Stanford to about 42% at UC Davis, illustrating the importance of building a balanced college application list.
The rankings also highlight strong-performing institutions that receive less national attention, including Humphreys University (#9 in California) and West Coast University–Anaheim (#15), demonstrating how student outcomes can differ from traditional prestige rankings.
