ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – September 21, 2026 – A 200-page paperback costs $70.11 to print as a single copy and $5.12 per copy in a run of 1,000, according to price data published today by Harmony Publishing LLC. The 93 percent decline tracks quantity, not page count, and most of it happens before the 100-copy mark.
The data comes from 139 print quotes covering eight quantity levels, 19 trim sizes and six paper stocks. It shows that per-copy price falls by 80 percent between one copy and 100, then by another 63 percent between 100 and 1,000. Authors who order 50 copies instead of 100 pay roughly twice as much per book for the same print job.
The price breaks fall at 1, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, 1,000 and 2,000 copies. At each break the rate applied to every page changes, so the saving compounds across the whole order rather than applying only to the additional copies. A 200-page book costs $13.96 per copy at 100 copies, $5.77 at 500 and $5.12 at 1,000. The same book at 25 copies costs $8.01 per copy, which is higher per unit than the 100-copy rate despite the smaller run.
Page count affects the total but not the shape of the curve. Each additional page adds a fixed amount per copy: on a 100-copy order, moving from a 100-page book to a 500-page book adds $8.00 to the total — two cents per page per copy. Quantity changes the rate applied to every page in the book.
Interior colour raises the cost substantially more than page count does. On the same 200-page paperback, a full-colour interior costs between 1.8 and 3.25 times the black-and-white price depending on quantity. The premium falls as volume rises: it is highest at around 100 copies and narrows to roughly 1.5 times at 2,000. Authors printing colour at low volume pay the steepest multiple.
Trim size and paper stock have smaller effects than quantity. Larger trims use more paper. At a 300-page, 100-copy order, moving from 60-pound natural stock to 100-pound gloss raises the price by 58 percent, while 60-pound opaque and 80-pound gloss both add 11 percent. Two stocks carry lower maximum page counts: books printed on 100-pound stock are limited to 700 pages, and the two landscape formats to 620 pages. Standard stocks accept up to 840 pages.
“The break points matter more than the page count,” said Michael Ramirez, spokesperson for Harmony Publishing LLC. “An author who prints 100 copies pays about $14 a book. The same author at 500 copies pays under $6. Nothing about the book changed.”
The company said it collected the quotes to give authors a reference point, because most printing prices are quoted privately and published figures rarely reflect how quantity changes the rate.
